Burn 2003

Burn night at Burning Man 2003. The structure supporting the man has become massive in the past couple of years. This year's burn was the most impressive yet. Here are some of the initial fire works. The heat from the burn was so intense, that even at our distance (~100m) we were leaning back and shielding our faces. Again the word 'conflagration' is redefined.
NetHead

There really is an explanation for this. I was working at Netscape and our director, Gene, had announced he was leaving. It was fairly common knowledge that he was leaving because of his VP, Bill W***. Well, Bill was supposed to come out and meet our team the next day. Let us simply say that we harbored no great love for this man. That evening I went out with Marya (from my team), Bernd and Tilo. We went out for sushi, and started drinking sake and asahi. At some point in the evening, it seemed like a good idea to do this. Bernd and Marya worked on my head together. We got most of it on video tape. At one point I gave a little speech, where I thanked the VP for getting rid of Gene, since Gene was such a source of inspiration and we were tired of being so motivated and caring about the company.
Visiting N.C.

In April 2003, we finally made it down to North Carolina. Here we are in Jim and Barbara's living room along with Jimmy, Rose and their kids.
House Layout

This is a view of the first floor of the main house. Clockwise from the top, the rooms are: mudroom, coat closet, library, exercise room, dining room, kitchen and kid's space. In the center is a living room space which is open to the kitchen, dining room and entry.
Dining Room

I've spent a lot of time working on a design for a communal house. This is a view from the dining room of my latest working design. The ceiling, which would cover all but the space over the couches, is missing. On the left you can see the edge of the kitchen, with a large chimney and brick oven for baking. In the background is the doorway to the library, a hallway to one of the apartment wings and some art.
